If you’ve been searching for laser skin resurfacing, you’ve probably come across two names more than any others: HALO and CO2. Both deliver real, visible results, but they work very differently and require very different recovery. Each option is suited to different patients and goals.
At The Face Loft, with locations in Cranberry Township and McMurray, PA, we offer HALO Hybrid Laser as our primary resurfacing treatment. There’s a reason for that, and this post is our honest explanation of why.
We’ll walk you through how both technologies work, where CO2 laser still makes sense, and why HALO is the right starting point for most patients looking to restore radiance, smooth texture, and address sun damage without significant downtime.
What Is HALO Hybrid Laser?
HALO, developed by Sciton, is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser, and it’s genuinely different from anything that came before it. What makes it unique is that it delivers two laser wavelengths simultaneously in a single pass:
- A non-ablative wavelength (1470nm) that heats the deeper dermis, stimulating collagen production without breaking the surface of your skin
- An ablative wavelength (2940nm) that removes a precise fraction of the outer skin layer, triggering surface renewal
By combining both in one treatment, HALO addresses deep structural concerns: fine lines, loss of firmness, sun damage below the surface, and surface concerns like texture, tone, and dullness at the same time. No single-wavelength laser can do that.
The “fractional” design is equally important. Rather than treating the entire surface, HALO treats thousands of microscopic columns across the skin, leaving surrounding tissue untouched. That surrounding tissue is what makes healing so much faster than traditional ablative lasers, and why our patients are typically back to normal life within a week.
HALO is ideal for:
- Fine lines and early wrinkles
- Sun damage and uneven pigmentation
- Enlarged pores
- Dull, uneven skin tone
- Superficial acne scars
- Loss of skin radiance (the “HALO glow” is real, and our patients talk about it constantly)
Typical downtime: 2–5 days of redness and peeling, with most patients returning to normal activities within a week.
What Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
CO2 laser resurfacing has been the gold standard in ablative skin resurfacing for decades. It uses a 10,600nm wavelength to vaporize the outer layers of skin, triggering a significant wound-healing response that produces dramatic collagen remodeling and long-lasting results.
Traditional CO2 (fully ablative) removes the entire surface of treated skin. Fractional CO2 (such as Fraxel Re:pair) applies the same wavelength in a fractional pattern, still significantly more aggressive than HALO, but with more manageable recovery than the fully ablative version.
CO2 laser is best for:
- Deep wrinkles and significant skin laxity
- Severe sun damage and actinic keratoses
- Deep acne scars
- Significant textural irregularities that require maximum correction
Typical downtime: 7–14 days for fractional CO2; up to 3–4 weeks for fully ablative CO2.

Why We Recommend HALO for Most of Our Patients
CO2 is a powerful tool, but it’s a significant medical procedure that comes with a lengthy recovery, higher complication risk (particularly for patients with medium to darker skin tones), and frankly more than most patients need to get outstanding results.
The majority of people who walk through our doors in Cranberry Township and McMurray are dealing with sun damage that’s accumulated over years, early signs of aging, and concerns about tone, texture, and pore size. For these patients (which is the vast majority of people we see), HALO consistently delivers transformative results with a recovery that fits into real life.
Here’s what separates HALO clinically:
The dual-wavelength advantage. No other fractional laser simultaneously targets both the surface and the deep dermis. CO2 in fractional form is primarily a surface treatment. HALO’s non-ablative wavelength reaches deeper to stimulate collagen at the structural level, which is why patients often notice continued improvement for three to six months after a single session.
Safety across skin tones. CO2 carries a meaningful risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in patients with medium to darker skin tones. HALO’s more controlled ablative component significantly reduces this risk, making it appropriate for a wider range of patients.
Fully customizable to you. HALO’s treatment parameters are dialed in precisely to your skin concerns, skin type, and lifestyle. A lighter treatment produces the HALO glow: luminosity and tone improvement with minimal downtime. A deeper treatment addresses more significant sun damage and textural concerns. Same device, calibrated to you.
The HALO glow is real. Patients and providers alike use this term because it genuinely describes something you can’t quite achieve any other way. The combination of surface renewal and deep collagen stimulation produces a quality of radiance that makes your skin look like the best version of itself.
Most of our patients don’t need the most aggressive laser on the market. They need the right laser for their skin and their schedule. HALO checks both boxes for the overwhelming majority of people we see.”

Is HALO Right for You?
HALO is a great fit if you:
- Have visible sun damage, uneven tone, or dullness that skincare alone hasn’t been able to fix
- Want to improve skin texture and pore appearance
- Are bothered by fine lines or early wrinkles but aren’t ready for more invasive procedures
- Have mild to moderate acne scarring
- Want real, lasting results with a recovery measured in days, not weeks
- Are in good general health with realistic expectations
HALO is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, have active skin infections or cold sores in the treatment area, or have certain autoimmune conditions. Your provider will review your full health history at your consultation.
What to Expect at Your HALO Appointment
We believe part of what sets The Face Loft apart is how prepared our patients feel walking in. Here’s exactly what your HALO experience looks like:
Before your appointment: You’ll complete a consultation to confirm candidacy and discuss your specific concerns. In the weeks leading up to treatment, your provider may recommend prepping your skin with a retinoid, SPF regimen, or specific products to optimize your results.
Day of treatment: A topical numbing cream is applied approximately 45–60 minutes before we begin. HALO treatments typically take 30–60 minutes depending on the treatment area. Most patients describe the sensation as warmth and mild prickling, very manageable with proper numbing.
Immediately after: Your skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to a moderate sunburn. We’ll apply a healing ointment and walk you through aftercare instructions before you leave.
Days 1–2: Redness and swelling peak, particularly around the eyes. This is completely normal.
Days 3–5: Tiny micro-scabs (MENDs) begin to shed as your skin renews. This is the active healing phase. Avoid picking or scrubbing.
Days 5–7: Most patients are comfortable returning to work and social activities. Makeup can typically be applied once the MENDs have shed.
Weeks 4–12+: Collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface. Many patients notice their best results at the three-month mark, and we love hearing about it.
How Does HALO Compare to Other Treatments?
Patients researching HALO often also come across MOXI and BBL HERO. Here’s a quick orientation:
MOXI is a lighter, non-ablative fractional laser, excellent for skin maintenance and early prevention. Think of MOXI as your entry point, and HALO as the next level up when you’re ready for more visible correction.
BBL HERO is an intense pulsed light treatment that targets pigment and vascular concerns specifically. BBL is frequently combined with HALO for patients who want both tone correction and overall resurfacing, a powerful pairing.
CO2 sits above HALO in terms of aggression and downtime, appropriate for the most se
vere concerns. For the vast majority of our patients, HALO delivers everything they need.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many HALO treatments will I need?
Most patients see significant improvement after a single treatment. For more advanced sun damage or textural concerns, a second treatment 6–12 months later can build on those results. Annual maintenance is recommended for long-term collagen health.
Is HALO safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. HALO’s controlled fractional design makes it appropriate for a broader range of skin tones than CO2. Your provider will review your skin type at consultation and adjust treatment parameters accordingly.
Can HALO be done in the summer?
We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure for 4–6 weeks following treatment, and diligent SPF is non-negotiable post-treatment. Many patients schedule HALO in fall or early spring. Your provider can help you find the right timing.
Does HALO help with acne scars?
Yes, for superficial to moderate acne scars. HALO’s dual-wavelength design addresses both surface texture and deeper collagen remodeling. Deeper or more severe scarring may benefit from a combination approach. Your provider will assess this at consultation.
What’s the best treatment for sun spots on my face?
Sun spots are one of HALO’s most satisfying targets. The ablative wavelength breaks up surface pigmentation while the non-ablative component addresses deeper pigment. Many patients see significant lightening of sun spots after a single session.
How long do HALO results last?
Results are long-lasting: the collagen stimulated by HALO is real structural improvement, not a temporary effect. Your skin continues to age and accumulate sun damage over time, so an annual maintenance treatment helps preserve and build on your results.
Ready to see if HALO is right for your skin?
Our providers at The Face Loft are here to help you figure out exactly what your skin needs, with no pressure and no one-size-fits-all treatment plans. We’ll assess your concerns, your skin type, and your lifestyle, and give you an honest recommendation built around your long-term goals.
