Summer in Pittsburgh changes your skin. More sun exposure, higher humidity, sweat, and heat all shift what your skin needs from June through August, and the products and routine that served you well in March may not be cutting it anymore.
This is our edited guide to building a summer skincare routine using the professional-grade products we carry at The Face Loft. Not a trend roundup and not an overwhelming list. Just a practical, provider-informed recommendation for what actually works when the weather heats up.
Step One: Rethink Your Cleanser
Summer heat and humidity mean more oil production and more daily buildup. If you have been using a rich or creamy cleanser through the colder months, summer is a good time to shift to something lighter and more thorough. A gentle foaming or gel cleanser removes excess sebum without stripping the skin’s moisture barrier.
The goal at this step is a clean, balanced canvas, not squeaky tightness. If your skin feels dry or tight after cleansing, the cleanser is too aggressive for your barrier.
Step Two: Do Not Skip the Vitamin C
Vitamin C is the most important addition to a summer skincare routine, and it is also one of the most skipped. Here is why it matters: UV exposure generates free radicals in the skin, and vitamin C is one of the most effective antioxidants available to neutralize them before they cause oxidative damage. Used consistently in the morning, vitamin C helps protect against the daily sun exposure that accumulates into pigmentation, premature aging, and uneven tone.
The clinical standard is L-ascorbic acid at a concentration of 10 to 20 percent. We carry SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and Phloretin CF at The Face Loft. Both are among the most extensively studied vitamin C formulations available, and both are significantly more effective than the vitamin C products you will find at a general retailer. Apply in the morning after cleansing, before SPF.
Step Three: SPF Is Non-Negotiable (and Most People Are Underapplying It)
If there is one thing every provider at The Face Loft will tell every patient without exception, it is this: wear SPF every day, year-round, but especially in summer. UV damage is the single largest driver of premature skin aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer risk. Every treatment we offer, from HALO to microneedling to fillers, works better and lasts longer on skin that is consistently protected.
What most people get wrong is application amount. To achieve the SPF on the label, you need approximately a quarter teaspoon for the face alone. Most people apply far less. A good rule: if you think you have applied enough, apply a little more.
For summer, we recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 50, lightweight enough to wear under makeup or alone. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 and SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 are two options we carry that work beautifully in humidity without feeling heavy or pore-clogging.
A note on reapplication: SPF needs to be reapplied every two hours if you are spending time outdoors. A setting spray with SPF is one of the most practical ways to reapply over makeup.
Step Four: Adjust Your Retinoid for the Season
Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, retinaldehyde) are the most clinically proven anti-aging ingredient category available without a scalpel. But summer requires a thoughtful approach. Retinoids increase photosensitivity, which means the sun can more easily cause irritation and pigmentation changes in skin that has recently used them.
For most patients, the right summer approach is to shift retinoid use to evenings only (which is ideal year-round), reduce frequency slightly if you are spending significant time outdoors, and never skip SPF the following morning. If you are new to retinoids, summer is not necessarily the wrong time to start, but your provider can help you dial in the right entry point and frequency for your skin.
SkinBetter AlphaRet and the (plated) Skin Science line, which uses platelet-derived exosomes to support cell renewal with less irritation, are both available at The Face Loft and are worth a conversation with your provider if retinoid sensitivity has been a barrier for you in the past.
Step Five: Hydration Looks Different in Summer
A common summer mistake is abandoning moisturizer because the humidity makes skin feel less dry. Moisturizer is still important, but the formulation should shift. Heavy creams can feel occlusive and contribute to congestion in warm weather. A lightweight hyaluronic acid serum or gel moisturizer gives your skin the hydration it needs without the weight.
Hyaluronic acid attracts water to the skin’s surface and is non-comedogenic, making it one of the most versatile ingredients for summer skin regardless of skin type. Layer it under your SPF in the morning for a smooth, hydrated base.
The Summer Routine at a Glance
Morning: Gentle cleanser, vitamin C serum, lightweight moisturizer or HA serum, SPF 50. Reapply SPF every two hours if outdoors.
Evening: Thorough cleanse to remove SPF and buildup, retinoid (2 to 3 nights per week to start, adjusted based on tolerance), nourishing moisturizer.
A Note on Post-Treatment Skincare
If you have had a laser treatment, microneedling, or chemical peel this spring or early summer, your post-treatment skincare protocol matters especially in these months. Treated skin is more photosensitive and needs extra SPF diligence. Your provider will give you a specific aftercare routine, and those instructions take priority over any general guidance in this post.
“Summer is when we see the most sun damage undoing the work patients have done all year. Consistent SPF and a strong vitamin C in the morning is genuinely the most impactful thing you can do between appointments.” — Sean Riek, CRNP, The Face Loft
